Behaviour Management System:
It is the philosophy of this program that more is achieved in the correction of undesirable behaviour by a loving, caring attitude than through ‘punishment’. We, therefore, strive through conscious effort to reward good behaviour and to emphasize positive reinforcement. In building up a child’s self-esteem, emphasizing their strong points and in the showing of affection and approval, the child learns new and acceptable ways of behaving. When consequences are necessary they would be logical, easily ach ieved, quickly over and forgotten. (excerpt from Program Manual)
In-House Program:
Much of the in-house programming centers around family activities. The rural setting of the home provides plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities and plenty of physical activity is encouraged. The family setting provides a good setting for life skills training.
Off-Grounds Program:
Regular off-grounds activities vary between the homes. Typical activities include such things as swimming at the local YMCA or at a nearby beach in the summer, and gym nights. School trips are arranged regularly by the teachers in co-ordination with the group home staff. Each home goes camping at least once during the summer. There is opportunity for involvement in Youth Group activities, Scouts, Cadets and other community resources.
Clinical & Vocational:
Clinical support is arranged in conjunction with referring agencies. We work closely with a number of psychologists and psychiatrists in the area.
We have retained Thomas Venema , BA, MSW, psychotherapist, of Lidkea Stob Venema and Associates, as a consultant, working with us in the area of general and individual programming and staff support. All employees and foster families have unlimited access to Mr. Venema’s services through Mutual Support Employee Assistance Plan.
When a child is placed in the program, and intake assessment is done by either Mr. Venema or by Ena Koole-Vandezande, an associate with the firm. The intake assessment consists of four sessions, a consultation, and a brief written summary of recommendations. Recommendations are made regarding therapeutic needs and either Mr. Venema or Ms. Vandezande are available to provide ongoing individual therapy.
Where vocational training is needed we make individual arrangements with a local vocational training program. We also make arrangements with local businesses, where appropriate, to provide employment for residents.
